El Medano is a small town close to the main south airport. It is not a developed resort like Playa de las Americas, but a Canarian town with a big beach. The town is backed by Montana Roja (which is more hill than mountain). The area is popular with nudists.
El Medano is Tenerife's windsurfing and kiteboarding hot spot. The golden beach is long and flat and receives regular trade winds. Beneath Montana Roja, are small coves, providing shelter from the wind, whilst still allowing you to be entertained by the surfers and boarders.
If you are looking for a typical Tenerife village, with few tourist facilities, then this may suit you admirably. If you prefer a lively resort, try Playa de las Americas instead.
